    Features
Sunstone Z39.50 Server version 2.0 is a general version 3 Z39.50 Target for the BRS/SEARCH search engine. The server is designed to be easily configurable for any BRS database. Attributes and their mapping to the database and other parameters can be specified in detail. Record formats SUTRS, GRS-1 and Usmarc are accessible using standard BRS functionality (print time formatting). Any other record format (all MARC formats, SGML, XML, postscript, gif...) can are accessible through Java APIs or external executables (perl scripts, C programs et cetera). Sunstone Z39.50 Server uses a three-layer architecture, which means Z39.50 server and BRS database do not have reside to on the same server. Sunstone Z39.50 Server communicate using engine commands and brsnetd: Server specificationsInitialize Authentication using username and password possible. Set your own limits for prefererredMessageSize and exceptionalRecordSize. Name the Z39.50 server yourself. Specify services supported/not supported. You can turn off services you don't want to support. Close Will recognise a Close request and issue a response before closing session. Will issue a Close if timed out (configurable timeout) or if a malformed PDU is received in version 3. Search Attributes Searching attributes and their mapping to database fields completely configurable. Supporting the Bib-1 attribute set. Supporting other attribute sets with the same six attribute types as Bib-1 directly (GILS for instance). Supporting other kinds of attribute sets through Java API. Bib-1 specific Use - supports all use attribute values. Relation - supports values 1 - 6: less than, less than or equal, equal, greater or equal, greater than, not equal. Position - supports value 3: any position in field Structure - supports all values. Truncation - supports values 1, 2, 3, 100, 101: right truncation, left truncation, left and right truncation, do not truncate, process # in search term. Completeness - supports the value 1: incomplete subfield. Other search specifications Supports the type-1 (RPN) query. Supports "piggybacking" (client asks server to supply records in a SearchResponse-PDU). Supports naming of result sets. Present Supports additionalRanges. Supports record formats Usmarc, GRS-1 and SUTRS through BRS print time formatting. Supports all other record formats through a Java API: Format the records using your own Java class used directly by the server. external programs: Format the records using external executables, such as a perl script or a C program. Delete-result-set Supports both list and bulk delete. Scan Browsing attributes and their mapping to database fields completely configurable. Supporting preferredPositionInResponse from 0 to numberOfRecordsRequested. Supporting zero stepSize. Uses BRS language tables for ordering terms. Sort Supporting both sortField and sortAttributes as sortKey. Sorting attributes and their mapping to database fields completely configurable. Supporting both ascending and descending values of sortRelation. Supporting caseInsensitive value of caseSensitivity. Supporting both databaseSpecific and generic sortKey. Using persistent sort in BRS 6.3, sorting when needed for earlier versions. Other features Supports both version 2 (Z39.50 - 1992) and version 3 (Z39.50 - 1995) of Z39.50. Uses the Bib-1 diagnostic set. Set any BRS Switches required at your BRS installation. BRS databases can be divided into different (logical) Z39.50 databases using UNIVERSE. Specify default operators between words to support tricky attributes: (structure = phrase, or use = personal name) It is possible to use BRS operator tables instead of assuming English operators. Future developmentSunstone Z39.50 Server is already a very capable Z39.50 server. However, the standard is constantly evolving and spreading into new domains of information systems. This leads to a demand for new functionality. We are currently looking into: Explain Sunstone Z39.50 Server for Dataware II The new Attribute Architecture developed by the Z39.50 Implementors Group
